When I checked my stats today I've noticed that about 10 people accessed my download page without paying.

There is a certain search engine (if you can call it that) that indexes even pages that have a "noindex, nofollow" meta tag, and this is how they found out about my downloads page.

I also use this method and downloaded a few products on clickbank.com and paydotcom.com for FREE.Yes, it works, apparently it's used by a lot of people and it's very scarry!

So if you guys know other free method to protect the downloads page (I'm with paydotcom.com), besides adding the nofollow meta tag, please share it with me.

Hi,

You can find plenty of discussion on methods; both free and paid, on downloads protection within our forum threads but they are all pertaining to ClickBank products.

You can post your question at PDC's forum or consider using
http://www.dlguard.com/

Good luck

Another alternative would be password protect your directories with .htaccess

But it may require you to periodically change the password and email your customers the current passwords.

Hi. Can you please let me know what changing .htm or .html to .php will do? Is that a simple fix to keeping people from accessing your product download without paying for it?

Changing to .php will stop robots to locate and execute particular page.
If you want people to download a product after paying you, you should keep this file in a download directory and password protect it. Provide download link and login details on thankyou page. Set thankyou page not to be indexed by search engines and change its extension to .php for more safety. We are doing the same on one of our website where we are selling a product online.

Hope this is clear and help you.

Just for your info:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">

Does not 100% means that you won't get indexed by search engines.

Cheers

Also, Clickbank requires you to type a statement on your ThankYou page such as: Your Credit Card statement will show a charge from Clkbank*com.

So many people search for this text on search engines... I made an image with this text and put it on my page instead of typing the actual text.

I am not sure if this applies to paydotcom.

If anyone is interested, I can code custom thank you pages rather cheap.

I can make it so that your products are fully protected from unauthorized access whether the search engines index your thank you page or not.

Clickbank actually provides sample scripts you can use to protect your thank you page at http://www.clickbank.com/publisher_tools.html#Publisher_Tools_7

You can implement that yourself for free or if you have trouble with it or need extra protection other than what that script provides, I can code something for you just send me a pm.

You can get the script for free here: CB Product Protection Script

Good luck

If you want to handle all your products additions and changes yourself, and you don't have any programming knowledge, or perhaps you DO but you have better things to do with your time, you may want to check out DLGuard: www.dlguard.com

I originally wrote this for Clickbank. It now has a LOT of other processors attached, but it still out-performs and offers more features and is much easier to use than it's competition.

You may be supirsed just how much time you save Wink

Naturally you also get the extra benefits like easy customer management, resending download liks, sales page conversion stats, download stats, Clickbank membership creation, etc. etc.

So it's NOT just a download protector, though it DOES do that really well too (as well as creating expiring download links).

cheers
Sam

There are plenty HTML encryptors available on net which protects all arts of a web page as well as full websites. These are very reliable and complete.

Hi Toniya,

Please do not take my comments personally. In fact if you search earlier threads, I too recommend people to use 'noindex' in their meta tags.

Allow me to elaborate:

To prevent your downloads from being hijacked, using the 'noindex, nofollow' feature in your meta tags is one of the things you should do but it is not a complete solution. This is because different search engines have different standards.
See:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum30/34757.htm
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/handling-noindex-meta-tags/

Cheers

noindex, nofollow is merely a suggestion to a search engine - it it no way prevents them from following or indexing a linked page. Mainstream engines may or may not follow these links but even if so do not publish the results. If all you're using to protect your downloads are noindex, nofollow and your pages are otherwise publicly linked, you're vulnerable.

Actually ... even if you're not publicly linked. If one of your customers uses certain browser toolbars (I believe one affiliated with Alexa does this) .... even unpublished URLs they visit can end up published ... then of course you have malware that gives you the same vulnerability.
